CONOR BEARY

The Masonic Order of Liberia is a fraternal organisation based on the principles of Freemasonry, introduced to Liberia when freed slaves emigrated to Liberia and took Christian beliefs with them. It tended to restrict its members to Americo- Liberians and was highly influential within the ruling True Whig party from its founding until the coup of Samuel Doe in 1980, when much of its senior leadership was killed.

Once regarded as the most powerful organisation in Liberia it no longer wields the same political and economic power, however its strict membership policy is still highly selective, generally edging towards the upper echelon of society.

The following pictures are from an annual celebration of worship. Spending the morning at the Masonic Temple before marching through the streets of Monrovia.
